You may or may not have noticed that it’s winter. Which means that it’s probably not the most ideal time to forgo pants altogether. But no one ever said Hollywood stars play by the style rules us commoners adhere to, as evidenced by (from left) Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Rihanna, who all decided to opt out of bottoms in the past two days. If you’re interested in giving this look a shot yourself, we thought a photo guide might be helpful, as well as some tips for where to wear it.

The Life’s a Beach: Somehow, the least clothed person on this list is also in the coldest city. Lady Gaga, who doesn’t let the freezing temperatures keep her from wearing her preferred bikini. She just adds a body stocking and sky-high heels, plus enough hair to wrap herself in if she does feel a bit chilly, and she’s good to go — to a restaurant, to a movie, to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Where you could wear it: If you don’t have a friend who is hosting his first night of a talk show institution, you could achieve a similar upstaging effect by wearing this to a wedding or bat mitzvah.

The Party Pants (or Lack Thereof): Selena Gomez went out on the town wearing her tap costume from the Hollywood Bowl production of Cabaret — wait, what’s that? This was just a regular night out? Well, then, we’re not quite sure how to explain the satin crop top and drawstring hot pants, worn with tights and pink heels, and all topped with a blazer. But her hair looks great. Where you could wear it: To a bachelorette party where you’re hoping to annoy the bride; to school if you want to be sent home for the day; to Cabaret auditions.

The Rihanna: This outfit is not for amateurs. Rihanna is one of the few people who could pair a polka-dot embossed romper with an enormous and dramatic heart-and-leopard coat. Of course, the Cleopatra-esque do, wine-hued lips, bold cuffs and bronze heels are essential to making this whole thing work. Where you could wear it: If you’re Rihanna, literally anywhere. (We recommend Jamba Juice to give the counter guy something to tell his mom about later.) If you’re not, proceed with extreme caution.
